Colt: The Name Behind the American Handgun
Samuel Colt opened his first factory in Paterson, New Jersey in 1836, so this brand has been a Garden State story from the start. What followed, no other gunmaker can match: the Single Action Army that rode through the Old West, the Browning-designed Model 1911 that served as the standard American sidearm for more than seven decades, the Python that Colt itself calls arguably the finest production revolver ever built, and the AR-15 family, whose military-issue rifles and M4 carbines became the standard arm of every branch of the U.S. military. Colt's tagline is Be Legendary, and for once the slogan is doing less work than the catalog.
Shooters choose Colt for the same reason collectors do: it is the original. A Colt 1911 comes from the company that shipped the first one. A Colt AR comes from the company that has built it since the 1960s. And since the Python, Anaconda, and King Cobra came back, Colt has been building double-action revolvers again with CNC precision, a beefier topstrap, and triggers reviewers measure against the vintage guns and find just as good. Colt is now part of Colt CZ Group and still builds in the United States.
Colt Models We Stock
Snake Guns and Other Colt Revolvers
The biggest slice of the Colt catalog, and the Python leads by a mile.
- Python - The 357 Magnum icon in stainless, blued, and matte finishes, from the 2.5 in snub through 3, 4.25, 5, and 6 in to the 8 in hunter, plus Combat Elite and Target versions. Full underlug, vent rib, and that trigger.
- Anaconda - The big-frame 44 Magnum in 4.25, 6, and 8 in, with 45 Colt chamberings and a Target model. For handgun hunters and anyone who wants the largest snake.
- King Cobra - Colt's trimmer 357 Magnum in 2 in Carry, 3 in, and 4.25 in. The 22 LR King Cobra and King Cobra Target give the same feel with rimfire practice.
- Cobra and Night Cobra - The 38 Special that brought Colt back to double-action revolvers in 2017, in 2 in and 4 in, plus the low-light Night Cobra.
- Viper - A 357 Magnum with checkered walnut and a classic profile. Ours is the 4.25 in.
- Grizzly and Kodiak - The newest Colts. The Grizzly is a 357 Magnum with a fluted barrel in 3, 4.25, and 6 in; the Kodiak is a 44 Magnum with a ported barrel and unfluted cylinder in 4.25, 6, and 8 in.
- Single Action Army - The Peacemaker, still made by Colt, as a 7.5 in 45 Colt.
Colt 1911 Pistols
Still built the way people picture a 1911, from bare-bones classic to match-ready.
- Government and 1911 Classic - The 5 in full-size in 45 ACP and 38 Super, in blued, stainless, and Royal Blue. The gun every other 1911 is measured against.
- Series 70 - The classic action without the later firing-pin safety, the one purists ask for by name.
- Gold Cup - Colt's target 1911 in National Match, Trophy, and Lite trim, in 45 ACP, 9mm, and 38 Super.
- Competition - Match-ready out of the box, in stainless, two-tone, titanium, and optics-ready versions.
- Combat Elite and Combat Unit - Duty-flavored 1911s with night sights and aggressive grip texture. The Combat Elite comes in Government and Commander lengths; the Combat Unit is the 5 in Government.
- Commander family - Combat Commander, Lightweight Commander, and Night Commander, all 4.25 in, in 45 ACP, 9mm, and 38 Super.
- Defender and Lightweight Officer - The 3 in Defender in 45 ACP or 9mm, and the 4.25 in Lightweight Officer on a shortened frame. Colt's compact 1911s.
- Delta Elite - The 10mm 1911, a Colt since the 1980s.
Colt AR Rifles
Colt has built the AR-15 longer than anyone.
- LE6920 and CR6920 - The M4-pattern 16.1 in carbine reviewers call the benchmark of the AR world, in base, OEM, SOCOM, and Magpul-furnished MPS versions.
- Enhanced Patrol Rifle - The 6920 with the upgrades owners used to add themselves: free-float M-LOK rail, ambidextrous controls, and flip-up sights. We stock the EPR Pro and the matching upper kits too.
- AR15A4 - The 20 in rifle-length A4 for the full-size classic.
- CR6762 - Colt's carbine in 7.62x39, in standard and EPR trim.
