The P226-X is Sig Sauer’s all-metal, match-grade evolution of the P226 — an alloy frame and stainless slide, a bull barrel with a 35-degree reverse target crown, adjustable AX1 or AX2 triggers, and an optics-ready slide, all built on the platform that has served military and police units worldwide since 1984. The current LEGION line comes in two sizes, the 4.4-inch P226-X and the 3.8-inch P226-XCarry, alongside the 5-inch X-Five competition guns. Buying in New Jersey: we stock the P226-X LEGION, P226-XCarry LEGION and X-Five models in 10-round configurations, which are otherwise identical to the 18- and 20-round guns. You need a Permit to Purchase for each handgun, and our counter staff walk customers through it every week. Out-of-state buyers can order the standard-capacity versions and we ship to the FFL of your choice.
Every model shares the same all-metal frame, match-grade bull barrel and X-Series slide. What changes is barrel length, trigger system and whether an optic plate is fitted.

X-Five LEGION ›This is the choice that matters most, and it is not reversible without buying parts. Both triggers are adjustable, which is unusual at any price and the main reason the X-Series exists.
A long, heavier first press, then short single-action presses for every shot after. Adjustable for both pre-travel and over-travel. No manual safety; the decocker handles it. This is the classic P226 manual of arms, and if you carried a P226 on duty it is what your hands already know.
One short, light, identical press every time, adjustable for over-travel. Comes with a manual thumb safety, which adds about a quarter inch of width. Better for precision and speed on the range; requires the discipline of a safety-on carry routine if you carry it.

The X-Series frame has an undercut trigger guard and an M1913 rail, the slide carries X-Series serrations and an optics cut, and the barrel is a match-grade bull barrel with a 35-degree reverse target crown rather than a standard profile. The triggers are adjustable, the LEGION models wear G-10 grips and Cerakote, and the magazines are flush-fit 18-round rather than 15. It is the same lockwork and the same lineage, built to a higher standard.
If you carried a P226 in service or you want a decocker and no manual safety, the AX2 DA/SA is the familiar answer. If you shoot competition, or you came up on a 1911 and want the same short press every time, the AX1 SAO is better — it adds a manual thumb safety and roughly a quarter inch of width. Handle both; the difference is obvious in the hand and it is not something you can change later without buying parts.
Size and purpose. The X-Five is the five-inch competition gun, heavier at around 47 ounces, and built as a range and match pistol. The P226-X LEGION at 4.4 inches, and the XCarry at 3.8, are lighter, optics-ready and meant to be shot and carried. The LEGION line is also newer and shares parts with the X-Five: slides, controls, grips and trigger systems interchange.
No. New Jersey’s magazine limit is 10 rounds and it remains in force — a federal appeals court struck it down in July 2026 and stayed its own ruling in August. The pistols themselves are sold here in 10-round configurations, which is what we stock for New Jersey buyers.
The LEGION slides accept the SIG-LOC Pro, ROMEO1Pro, ROMEO2, Leupold DeltaPoint Pro and Trijicon RMR footprints. Models with RXSL in the part number arrive with the SIG-LOC Pro plate already fitted. Ask at the counter and we will confirm what fits the exact model you are looking at.
Standard P226 magazines will function, but the X-Series ships with flush-fit 18-round steel magazines designed for the X frame, and those are what you want. New Jersey guns come with 10-round magazines. We stock spares — ask at the counter or check the magazines category.
