Smith & Wesson

Smith & Wesson: the guns do the talking

Smith & Wesson does not say much about itself. Its catalog reads like a parts list: pistols, revolvers, rifles. No slogans. That restraint is the brand. When you have been building handguns since 1852, put the Model 10 on the hip of most American police officers for half a century, and introduced the first 357 Magnum and 44 Magnum revolvers, you can let the hardware talk.

What keeps shooters coming back is range. Few makers cover a pocket 380, a duty 9mm, a target 22, a hunting 44, a lever gun and an AR under one roof. The M&P polymer pistol proved the point in 2005, landing in more than a hundred police departments in its first year. Today it builds out of Maryville, Tennessee, with a Performance Center tuning the best of the line.

The Smith & Wesson models we stock

Concealed carry

  • M&P Shield Plus: the slim carry 9mm, with a 3.1 in or 4 in barrel and a trigger that matches the rest of the gun.
  • Bodyguard 2.0: the micro 380. A 2.75 in barrel, under ten ounces, a flat-faced trigger and sights you can actually use. The Carry Comp version runs 3.1 in.
  • M&P Shield X: the newest Shield. A 3.6 in barrel, a taller grip, an optics-ready slide, a choice of thumb safety or none, and a Performance Center Carry Comp variant.
  • Shield EZ and Equalizer: easy-rack slides and a grip safety for anyone who fights a stiff pistol. The EZ comes in 380 and 9mm; the Equalizer adds a 3.675 in barrel and a fuller grip.
  • CSX: aluminum frame, hammer fired, a real thumb safety. A micro 9mm for shooters who want a single-action trigger.
  • J-frame revolvers: the 642, 442, 637, 638, 640, 340, 360, 60, 36 and the new Bodyguard 38 2.0. Barrels from 1.88 in and nothing to snag. The 642 has ridden in more pockets than any of us can count.

Full-size and range pistols

  • M&P M2.0: the flagship striker-fired line in 9mm, 40 S&W, 45 ACP and 10mm, from a 3.6 in subcompact through the 5 in Competitor to a 5.6 in 10mm. The M2.0 Metal puts the same platform on an aluminum frame; Heavy Duty versions add weight for competition.
  • SD9 2.0 and SD40 2.0: a straightforward striker-fired pistol with a 4 in barrel, and a sensible first gun.
  • SW1911 E Series and Performance Center 1911: Smith & Wesson's take on the classic, in 4.25 in and 5 in.
  • M&P 5.7 and M&P 22 WMR: fast, flat-shooting small-bore pistols.
  • Rimfire: the M&P 22, the SW22 Victory in 5.5 in and 6 in Performance Center trim, and the Model 41, a bullseye pistol that has been winning matches for decades.

Revolvers

  • 686 Plus and 586: the L-frame 357 Magnum most shooters picture when they hear the name, with 2.5 in to 7 in barrels, plus Deluxe and Performance Center versions.
  • Model 19, 66 and Model 10: the K-frames. The 19 Carry Comp and K-Comp bring the classic combat magnum into the compensated era.
  • 629, 29 Classic and 69 Combat Magnum: the 44 Magnum, from a 2.75 in carry gun to a 7.5 in Performance Center hunter. The 610 does the same job in 10mm.
  • 500 and 460XVR: the X-frames, the biggest production revolvers made, for handgun hunters and anyone who has always wanted to touch one off.
  • Specialists: the 617 and 648 in rimfire, the 986 and 940 in 9mm, the 627 and 327 Performance Center, the Governor in 410 and 45 Colt, the Model 350 in 350 Legend, and the 27, 25 and 57 Classics.

Rifles

  • M&P15 Sport III and M&P15 AXE: the AR that put Smith & Wesson in the rifle business, with a 16 in barrel; the M&P 10 Sport covers 308.
  • M&P15-22: AR controls in 22 LR, with a 16.5 in barrel, so the manual of arms carries straight over from the centerfire gun.
  • M&P FPC: a folding pistol-caliber carbine that runs M&P pistol magazines, in 9mm, 40 S&W, 10mm, 5.7x28mm and 22 LR.
  • Model 1854: the company's first lever action in 170 years. 44 Magnum, 357 Magnum, 45 Colt, 45-70, 30-30 and 360 Buckhammer, walnut or synthetic, 16.3 in to 20 in barrels.
