Mossberg: More Gun for the Money Since 1919
O.F. Mossberg & Sons started in rented space in New Haven, Connecticut in 1919, when Swedish immigrant Oscar Mossberg and his two sons set out to build firearms a working family could actually afford. More than a century later the company is still family-run, now in its fourth generation, and still sells on the founder's promise: more gun for the money.
That promise is why Mossberg calls itself the largest pump-action shotgun maker in the world. The Model 500 pump has been in continuous production since the early 1960s and passed the ten-million mark in 2013. Its heavier-built sibling, the 590A1, is the version built to the U.S. military's MilSpec 3443 standard. Mossberg does not spend many words on itself. The pitch is simple: the gun works, it keeps working, and it was built for people who work for a living.
Shooters who ask for a Mossberg usually know exactly what they want and why. The tang-mounted safety sits under your thumb where it belongs, right- or left-handed. Barrels swap without tools. And the aftermarket is enormous, so the gun you buy today can be a different gun in five years.
The Mossberg Models We Stock
These are the Mossberg families we stock, grouped by action.
Pump-Action Shotguns
- Model 500 — The all-purpose workhorse. In 12 gauge, 20 gauge and .410, in field, Combo, Optic Ready and Retrograde trim, for everything from doves to the truck rack.
- 500 Bantam and Super Bantam — The same action cut down for smaller-framed shooters. The 510 Mini goes shorter still for the youngest shooters.
- Model 590 — Heavier barrel and a longer tube, with bead or ghost-ring sights. The Persuader, Tactical, Nightstick and Retrograde variants are the defensive-shotgun standard for a reason.
- 590A1 — The military-spec version: heavy-wall barrel, metal trigger guard and safety, parkerized finish. Available with Magpul furniture, an M-LOK forend or XS sights.
- 590 Shockwave — The bird's-head Raptor grip and 14 in barrel make it the most distinctive gun in the Mossberg lineup. In 12 gauge, 20 gauge and .410.
- 590S — The newer receiver that cycles 1.75 in mini-shells alongside 2.75 in and 3 in loads with no adapter. Optic Ready and Shockwave versions too.
- 590R and 590RM — The 590 platform reworked to feed from a detachable box magazine.
- Maverick 88 — Built in Mossberg's Eagle Pass, Texas plant and sharing barrels with the 500; a lot of people's first shotgun.
- 835 Ulti-Mag — Overbored 3.5 in chamber for turkey and waterfowl, now on an Optic Ready receiver.
Semi-Auto Shotguns
- 940 and 940 Pro — Mossberg's gas-operated flagship: cleaner-running gas system, oversized controls, optic-ready receiver. The JM Pro is the competition version; the Snow Goose is built for high-volume waterfowl.
- 990 Aftershock — A semi-auto in the Shockwave format with a 14.75 in or 18.5 in barrel, offered with a Crimson Trace LaserSaddle.
- 935 Turkey Hunter — The 3.5 in magnum autoloader for spring gobblers.
- SA-20 and SA-20 Bantam — Light, soft-shooting 20 gauge gas guns, with a youth-sized option.
- Maverick SA — Mossberg's newest entry-level 12 gauge semi-auto, in walnut or black synthetic.
Over-and-Under Shotguns
- Silver Reserve II — A clean-lined field and clays gun with a walnut stock and engraved silver receiver, in 12, 20 and 28 gauge and .410.
- Gold Reserve II and Gold Reserve Black Label — A step up in wood and engraving, with 30 in barrels for the sporting-clays crowd.
Bolt-Action Rifles
- Patriot — Fluted barrel, adjustable LBA trigger, and chambered for nearly everything: .22-250, .243, .270, .308, .30-06, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC, 7mm PRC, .300 Win Mag, .350 Legend and .450 Bushmaster.
- Patriot Predator — Threaded barrel, synthetic stock and a Picatinny rail, built for coyotes and hogs.
- Patriot Night Train and Night Train II — Scoped packages ready to zero.
- Patriot LR Tactical — The long-range version in an adjustable stock, in 6.5 Creedmoor and .308.
- Patriot Bantam and Super Bantam — Shorter stocks for young or smaller hunters.
- MVP and MVP Scout — The bolt gun that feeds from AR-pattern magazines, with a 16.25 in barrel in 7.62 NATO.
