Can a gun be shipped to my house?

No. Firearms must ship to a Federal Firearms Licensee, who completes the transfer to you in person after a background check. Ammunition, optics, holsters and most accessories can ship directly to your door where state law permits.

If I buy from Urban Tactical Firearms and pick up in store, is there a transfer fee?

No. When you buy a firearm from Urban Tactical Firearms and collect it at the Marlton or Jersey City store, the firearm never leaves our custody, so it is not a transfer and there is no fee. A transfer fee applies only to a firearm bought from another retailer and shipped to us to receive on your behalf.

How long does a firearm background check take in New Jersey?

Often the same day, but sometimes one to three business days. The New Jersey State Police process every firearms background check in the state directly. Unlike most states, a New Jersey dealer cannot release a firearm after three days without an answer — an affirmative approval is required, so buyers should plan for the possibility of a second visit.

How much does it cost to get a gun permit in New Jersey?

A first-time buyer pays $50 for the Firearms Purchaser Identification Card, $25 for each handgun Permit to Purchase, and approximately $58 for fingerprinting — about $133 in total for a first handgun purchase. The $200 fee often cited is for the separate New Jersey Permit to Carry, not a permit to purchase.

Can I buy a handgun with 15-round magazines in New Jersey?

In most cases yes. New Jersey caps magazine capacity at 10 rounds, which restricts the magazine rather than the firearm. Semi-automatic rifles are more nuanced — some are prohibited by name, while many are available in compliant configurations.

Can I buy an AR-15 or a magazine over 10 rounds in New Jersey right now?

No. As of 13 August 2026 New Jersey's assault firearm ban and 10-round magazine limit are both in effect and enforceable. The Third Circuit ruled them unconstitutional on 17 July 2026, then stayed its own ruling on 4 August 2026 while New Jersey petitions the U.S. Supreme Court, which restored the existing restrictions. Violations remain criminally chargeable while the stay is in place.

Do I need an FID card to buy ammunition in New Jersey?

Do I need my own FFL licence to buy a gun online?

Can I have a firearm shipped to a dealer in a different state than where I live?

Handguns must be transferred to a dealer in your state of residence. Long guns may in some circumstances be transferred in another state, subject to the laws of both states.
